How to make bookmarks at home: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

If you love reading (and pretty stationery), making your own bookmarks is such a fun project! Not only can you customize them to your style, but they also make thoughtful gifts for friends, teachers, or book clubs. I design my bookmarks in Canva or Illustrator, but Canva is the most beginner-friendly option since it’s free and super accessible.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own bookmarks at home—using the tools I personally use. (I’ve linked them below in case you’d like to try them out. These are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.)

Step 1: Design Your Bookmark

  1. Open Canva (or your favorite design software).
  2. Choose the custom size: 2 x 6 inches or 2 x 7 inches are standard bookmark sizes.
  3. Add your design—quotes, patterns, illustrations, or even photos.
  4. Save your file as a PDF Print, or high-quality PNG.

Step 2: Print Your Design

For the best quality, print on either:

  1. Glossy Paper (for vibrant, shiny designs)
  2. Matte Cardstock (for a soft, smooth finish)

I use this printer, which handles both paper types really well, depending on the cardstock's weight. It may be easier for some to get a printer that feeds from the top and not from an in-built tray, if you want bookmarks to be double-sided.

Step 3: Trim to Size

After printing, cut your bookmarks down to size with a paper trimmer for clean, straight edges. Depending on the cutter, you should slowly cut the top and then make sure the page aligns, so the bookmark is cut straight and accurately. If you use this version of a paper trimmer, you can hold the paper down in place, but you will have to cut one page at a time.

Step 4: Round the Corners (Optional)

If you want a softer look (and no sharp corners), a corner rounder makes a huge difference!

Step 5: Laminate for Durability

Bookmarks last much longer when laminated—no more bent corners or spills ruining them. I use:

  1. Laminator
  2. Laminate Sheets

Just place your bookmarks inside the sheet, run it through the laminator, and trim the edges again.

Now you have your own beautiful DIY bookmarks! You can even punch a hole at the top and add a tassel or ribbon for a special touch.
